Shame on me - but I do have a good excuse as it looks like I will finally be moving home, so I'm trying to sort out 26 years worth of accumulation - particularly in the arts and crafts area, but it is amazing what I'm finding at the back of kitchen cupboards!<br />
<br />
Anyway, a couple of weeks back I tried my hand at lino cutting/printing at a half day workshop.<br />
<br />
I was really surprised at how easy it was to control the cut. I decided to do a bee, as that is a favorite image of mine.<br />
<br />
Here is the finished cut -<br />

<br />
We used coloured tissue paper, book and map pages.<br />
<br />
Really good fun, and not bad for a first attempt. I will definitely be doing more.<br />
<br />
Still visiting exhibitions and places of interest. One of the recent exhibitions I loved was the Van Gogh exhibition at Tate Britain. Fabulous to see so many of his works brought together in one place.<br />
<br />

The iconic Sunflowers looks so much better in reality than any photograph of it, so I've not included it here, but it has now become one of my favourites too!<br />
<br />
The exhibition is on until 11 August, so do go if you can.<br />
<br />
I'm not producing much artwork at the moment, as moving house is taking priority, so bear with me in this transition period!<br />
<br />
<br />kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-79627109752432882422019-05-27T11:53:00.000+01:002019-05-27T11:53:17.803+01:00ImpressionsStill no positive news on potential house move, so I treated myself to a new easel, which can accommodate canvases up to 4 feet - exciting! It took me an hour and a half to put it together though, because I was working from one of those exploded diagrams, and I had to backtrack on a couple of occasions as I got the wrong assembly order!<br />
<br />
Here is my first go at using oil paints, with lavender as my inspiration. These are water soluble oil paints, so clean up is easy and no horrible fumes!<br />
<br />
I've used a canvas board and I did a base block colour in acrylic paint first.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG7i3jE6xDDGMivL8GPk6j43nSpBkjTW5FLkQfJlaYdewqzjxwYcQKuPNO21r3_4FsXnf16GEIQrcpzuIEKFTu5vXbesw4-wR_stfJwnLGFoE6kn-esqpGhHBTUqd33nIoewDb8VG-exG5/s1600/IMG_20190420_111606292.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1153" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG7i3jE6xDDGMivL8GPk6j43nSpBkjTW5FLkQfJlaYdewqzjxwYcQKuPNO21r3_4FsXnf16GEIQrcpzuIEKFTu5vXbesw4-wR_stfJwnLGFoE6kn-esqpGhHBTUqd33nIoewDb8VG-exG5/s640/IMG_20190420_111606292.jpg" width="460" /></a></div>
<br />
Love the feel of these paints, though drying time is a little irritating as I don't have many places to store them whilst waiting for them to dry. By the way, this is using my old easel, which is good for smaller works.<br />
<br />
Because I've been otherwise distracted trying to move house and have rather neglected this blog, I've got a lot of photos backed up that I wanted to share, so here is a very eclectic few!<br />
<br />
Now I don't really do kitchen stuff, but it was my great niece's first birthday, and I was asked to do a birthday cake. This is a layered chocolate cake which is a cake my mother used to make when my sister and I were small. It turned out okay, (phew!) and it was good that great grandma was there, if only in spirit.<br />

I'm slowing reducing my stash of craft paints which I don't use now.<br />
<br />
Here is what I produced - I added a bit of glitter in the first and last one.<br />

Happy bank holiday weekend!<br />
<br />kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-32518374863350629372019-04-01T12:06:00.000+01:002019-04-01T12:06:36.138+01:00Canvas, Cathedrals, Culture ... oh ... and a bit of shopping!Recently attended a workshop to create an abstract piece with canvas cutouts.<br />
<br />
We started by creating a design for the cut-outs; I decided to loosely base mine on a lotus flower. Then we cut the canvas from the back, and added some bits using Powertex. I used string and some mesh.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjprdtFFi-qYKfQbxZpn12Y_tFfg1NBuDXunSQChVLafD6Zn_Nr2CHb_2hKssxd0eEEEyDvCFZJ6pRbiYXgtCG3ejhbxE2uc3HgMr3L-NPUlm-fFpJWDZBMYE4Voh7QLITMJxtOLRpkXYmP/s1600/Cut+canvas+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="983" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjprdtFFi-qYKfQbxZpn12Y_tFfg1NBuDXunSQChVLafD6Zn_Nr2CHb_2hKssxd0eEEEyDvCFZJ6pRbiYXgtCG3ejhbxE2uc3HgMr3L-NPUlm-fFpJWDZBMYE4Voh7QLITMJxtOLRpkXYmP/s400/Cut+canvas+2.jpg" width="245" /></a></div>
<br />
Next the texture! Using stencils with paste, dribbling Powertex, and I made some clay flowers.<br />
Yes ... those flowers I seem to have an obsession with at the moment. Scroll back through a few older posts and you may come across them! Created more texture using P/tex with Stone Art (another P/tex product).<br />
<br />
Time for lunch!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnoNbDdSordX18X6GbGJcuSIfSAguVtCluVc0hRgF7S2-BwfBUaK9nnwBWhXQfOmDWnADMB3FnG45CqMt-E1d6n-84n4wEF7VVKeKMqZqDxZKho7Y_NbABc_a0d2m3Tlv5iWhEr1Br6Bdu/s1600/Cut+canvas+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1133" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnoNbDdSordX18X6GbGJcuSIfSAguVtCluVc0hRgF7S2-BwfBUaK9nnwBWhXQfOmDWnADMB3FnG45CqMt-E1d6n-84n4wEF7VVKeKMqZqDxZKho7Y_NbABc_a0d2m3Tlv5iWhEr1Br6Bdu/s400/Cut+canvas+3.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
<br />
Now for some colour!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZmQUQahFDYYwRL4WjxD-6P01iVPq2JQklXF_ZiWCNMqPzS3FsRyujPIxKqEuHYHBXlSAITll4DK_VtpNIWhfKvNZj5lkenEaY6HtyjvgnPQ1BagaRNerRrCRZfC2PGx8TPyKvMuwv0PvT/s1600/Cut+canvas+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1217" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZmQUQahFDYYwRL4WjxD-6P01iVPq2JQklXF_ZiWCNMqPzS3FsRyujPIxKqEuHYHBXlSAITll4DK_VtpNIWhfKvNZj5lkenEaY6HtyjvgnPQ1BagaRNerRrCRZfC2PGx8TPyKvMuwv0PvT/s640/Cut+canvas+1.jpg" width="484" /></a></div>
<br />
Had to finish at home - I covered the back board with gold mirri paper, then added some gold gilding flakes, and a final varnish before fixing the back board with a staple gun.<br />
<br />
Really enjoyable workshop.<br />
<br />
Had a trip to Chichester last week with the Arts Society. We visited the cathedral, which is currently having a new roof, replacing the copper tiles with lead. It is swathed in scaffolding, so not very photogenic, so here is what it did look like. You can see the old copper roof, which had turned green.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbIYnpI_tqVY3yWJw0U0c_To_XgFT0BxyIpNXQZIsaOlyf-Zklnudo38-mvRDET2t5NH2960zaQExlHcF1x7kVVX06A2b056QIJWqdZPJ7_zfTdNyvd8kieFmxINrT0m_NFt0USU9u957n/s1600/Chichester-Cathedral.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="470" data-original-width="700" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbIYnpI_tqVY3yWJw0U0c_To_XgFT0BxyIpNXQZIsaOlyf-Zklnudo38-mvRDET2t5NH2960zaQExlHcF1x7kVVX06A2b056QIJWqdZPJ7_zfTdNyvd8kieFmxINrT0m_NFt0USU9u957n/s400/Chichester-Cathedral.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We also visited the Pallant House Gallery, which features British art from 1900. The main exhibition at the moment is on Harold Gilman (1876-1919). Not allowed to take any photographs, so here is the front of the catalogue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfR9mLMG2muMCcaFNZrrctrnQ9PYyil_ldwQdWKX8Mh71kseVbL4-2SKSQWequAM1EAaU5azpuWr0RJaXJLge1kWNVF7SgfnEYHfallZy8JmvWdkkwxzSixOR4VWntreoGGEbNLSvw2_z2/s1600/Harold-Gilman-Catalogue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1140" data-original-width="969" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfR9mLMG2muMCcaFNZrrctrnQ9PYyil_ldwQdWKX8Mh71kseVbL4-2SKSQWequAM1EAaU5azpuWr0RJaXJLge1kWNVF7SgfnEYHfallZy8JmvWdkkwxzSixOR4VWntreoGGEbNLSvw2_z2/s400/Harold-Gilman-Catalogue.jpg" width="340" /></a></div>
<br />
Harold Gilman was a British painter of interiors, portraits and landscapes and a founder-member of the Camden Town Group. A group of English Post-Impressionist artists active between 1911 and 1913. They gathered frequently at the studio of painter Walter Sickert in the Camden Town area of London.<br />
<br />
Not one of my favourite artists but I do like his use of colour and thick paint.<br />
<br />
The Gallery had a fab bookshop with lots of reduced books, so I treated myself to one ...<br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; font-family: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: no-common-ligatures; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">Man Ray (</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; font-family: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: no-common-ligatures; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">1890 -1976) was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was best known for his photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. Man Ray is also noted for his work with photograms, which he called "rayographs" in reference to himself.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; font-family: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: no-common-ligatures; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">I first came across Man Ray a couple of years ago, when I visited Farley's House, home of surrealist painter Roland Penrose.</span><br />

<span style="color: #313131;"><span style="background-color: white; font-variant-ligatures: no-common-ligatures; letter-spacing: 0.17px;">Another good day.</span></span>kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-78620845687442591552019-03-20T09:20:00.000+00:002019-03-20T09:20:36.112+00:00One step forward ...two steps back!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sooo frustrating trying to move, my buyer has now lost her buyer, so everything back on hold and I don't know whether the house I want will still be available once a chain has reformed. Anyway, my property is back on the market ... arrggghhhh - need to keep it tidy again!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, very little happening on the creative front, but the Fearless Four did get together recently to finish a project we started some weeks ago.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You may recall the clay flowers I made (<a href="https://inkpaintandme.blogspot.com/2019/01/creating-happiness-inside-and-out.html">see here</a>). I made some more, to use on our project which was to create a very 3D canvas.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Because we were using a lot of modelling paste etc. it needed to thoroughly dry - hence our second get together to finish off.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I forgot to take a photo after stage one! So here is my completed canvas. A long thin one, which I don't often use.<br />
<br />
Ingredients include thick modelling paste, crackle paste, acrylic paint, gilding flakes; the copper leaves I've had for many years, and finally I've used some - though there are lots left!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrEs6bP3gspNdHShWtdo-g-0CkhBF6v-PwhipzjEyXL2wZZbFP21gHNUXTEOSkROdpVmrya8yIZYuk06BFUgJi-D0SiXp3bJHnmtQD4bybaUoki5dKBKi1pJ7owQoRFfUIi0MH5qlzPbRp/s1600/DSCN4963.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="703" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrEs6bP3gspNdHShWtdo-g-0CkhBF6v-PwhipzjEyXL2wZZbFP21gHNUXTEOSkROdpVmrya8yIZYuk06BFUgJi-D0SiXp3bJHnmtQD4bybaUoki5dKBKi1pJ7owQoRFfUIi0MH5qlzPbRp/s640/DSCN4963.jpg" width="280" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is a bit of a close-up ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The others managed to do two projects each -<br />

Another fun day with friends.<br />

<br />
Anyway, this was a little experiment. I've still got quite a bit of patterned paper stashed away from when I was into papercrafting.<br />
<br />
I took a square of hardboard and stuck a piece of patterned paper onto it. I forgot to take a photo at this point to show the paper, but this is a leftover piece. It's from a Tim Holtz designed paper pad.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitvazpB0EN73QAnypVmiCl-peGC-03kH7zlr2Ix3EwVz7ECoMyw_S8GPhU1mrLikvkNuLAdWS1pk3o6jWDNKMm6U4wFtN1H9Y2p-DesX8YUEOnUa6N-SuTRUkbg3aHnfVU4ZZG0zYUVkPV/s1600/Print+background+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="511" data-original-width="1600" height="127" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitvazpB0EN73QAnypVmiCl-peGC-03kH7zlr2Ix3EwVz7ECoMyw_S8GPhU1mrLikvkNuLAdWS1pk3o6jWDNKMm6U4wFtN1H9Y2p-DesX8YUEOnUa6N-SuTRUkbg3aHnfVU4ZZG0zYUVkPV/s400/Print+background+2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
When it was completely dry - I left it 24 hours - I coated it with clear watercolour ground (the equivalent of acrylic clear gesso).<br />
<br />
I then used 3 watercolour washes over it, with crumpled clingfilm (bottom left).<br />
<br />
The watercolour ground provided a key for the paint, and also prevented the washes from soaking into the paper.<br />
<br />
I painted some flower shapes in white gouache, and lastly added some gilding flakes.<br />
<br />
It is important to let it dry completely between each layer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg1T9UFSa1dn9_tpuKWU_eJ8lKbYrAXmtyH0JhGuaKLdlR1kUqeSrmmwdJI1ry-HKBN4VrpqnP7j4OlHbyh6zKC0iQwkHYt7Gc1rjGZrZZBCsK_7JelYFl4zHH0nME2QJYcFNYmaZLbwnU/s1600/Print+background.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1561" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg1T9UFSa1dn9_tpuKWU_eJ8lKbYrAXmtyH0JhGuaKLdlR1kUqeSrmmwdJI1ry-HKBN4VrpqnP7j4OlHbyh6zKC0iQwkHYt7Gc1rjGZrZZBCsK_7JelYFl4zHH0nME2QJYcFNYmaZLbwnU/s400/Print+background.jpg" width="390" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm pleased with my floral abstract and the paper remains as smooth as when I first applied it. Clear watercolour ground is the way to go!<br />
<br />kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-76701513133602795822019-01-24T11:18:00.000+00:002019-01-24T11:18:06.699+00:00Creating happiness ... inside and outThe Fearless Four are half way through a project - in December we got together and made some clay things. Some in molds and some free form. Then we continued this month with using them on a canvas - making a highly textured background. Next month we will finish the project by painting the background and adding our clay creations.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, I decided to use some of my clay creations (free-formed flower shapes) in a small glass-fronted box frame.<br />
<br />
I cut some mountboard to size and painted the background with acrylic paints - including some metallics and interference paint.<br />
<br />
I die-cut some metal to form the stems as I wanted it to be 3D.<br />
<br />
You may remember the trip I did recently to the British Museum, where I found the inspiration for my flowers' colouring (<a href="https://inkpaintandme.blogspot.com/2018/12/fruits-of-my-labour.html">see here</a>).<br />
<br />
The flowers are painted with acrylic paint, including a little interference, and then some gold gilding flakes added to the centre. The actual clay centres are painted gold. Finally I used a high gloss varnish.<br />
<br />
I couldn't photograph it in its box frame as the glass created too may reflections, so this is before it went into the frame.<br />
<br />

<br />
Still in recycling mode using some of Laura's discarded items! This time an eclectic mix of a bottle, bowl of acorns and a mushroom ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

All things had a gold base colour ... and then I used acrylic paint (including an interference one) in a random way, and wrapped the bottle in cling film.<br />

<br />
That was fun ... but now I'm going back to my first love of watercolour and mixed media, and I've already prepped some boards.<br />
<br />
I was sent a couple of funnies that I thought I would share - as there is some element of truth in them!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><b>I have come to the conclusion</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><b>that buying craft supplies and</b></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><b>separate hobbies!</b></span></div>
<br />
So true - my other hobby is buying paint!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">My 2019 New Year's resolution</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">is to finish all my craft projects from 2018</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">that I should have done in 2017,</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">after I started them in 2016</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">after buying the supplies in 2015</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">with the patterns I found in 2014!</span></b></div>
<br />
My problem is that I find stuff I bought year's ago and can't remember what the project is ...<br />
<br />
Hope 2019 is a good one for everyone.<br />

Still trying to move, I've found a house I love but now looking for a buyer, as my original buyers went elsewhere, (I couldn't find anywhere at that time) - soooo frustrating!<br />
<br />
Anyway, something completely different. My sister is a woodturner (<a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/TreasuresFromTheTree">see her Etsy shop here</a>), and has turned items that she is either not happy with, or the wood is too boring. Sometimes she bins them but more often I ask for them, and I've had a growing collection of rejected things that I've not been too sure what to do with! The solution was staring me in the face - literally - being surrounded by paint!<br />
<br />
So here is my fantasy fruit with different paint effects, and I've given them a glossy lacquer finish. They look quite large, but the pear is only about 4 inches high.<br />
<br />

Really enjoyed doing something different, and I've got a bagful of rejects to go to! I've also told my sister never to bin anything again!<br />

My last post (below) was about my take on Hokasai's Great Wave, so sticking with the sea theme ... but under it this time, here is a large-ish canvas with jellyfish! There is something quite mesmerizing about how these creatures move through the water.<br />
<br />
Lots of texture, particularly at the bottom, using a little Powertex with threads and small shells, but this is mainly acrylic paint.<br />

<br />
We had decided to use some Powertex in our creations. Last year I visited the Hokusai exhibition at the British Museum (<a href="http://inkpaintandme.blogspot.com/2017/07/wave-power.html">see here</a>) and so decided to use his Under the Wave off Kanagawa (The Great Wave) as my inspiration.<br />
<br />
This is a box canvas and I mainly used heavy modelling paste, together with some threads and ribbons (dunked in Powertex), for the structure. I also got some colour on the background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyPruKXkW6OwY5YX_RYJoRPrXhz8JvRf0qwTsa7L9i42nKYjROEeFCPTZLr0gGW5fjHaxvZZR9eDdO3nYMwVGgDig18zpL1ulfVrhVNwf7SLNSvna3tWAdY1AAfISGEgJ0bzATcirYr8SG/s1600/IMG_20181029_114818.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1260" data-original-width="1600" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyPruKXkW6OwY5YX_RYJoRPrXhz8JvRf0qwTsa7L9i42nKYjROEeFCPTZLr0gGW5fjHaxvZZR9eDdO3nYMwVGgDig18zpL1ulfVrhVNwf7SLNSvna3tWAdY1AAfISGEgJ0bzATcirYr8SG/s400/IMG_20181029_114818.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
As the paste was so thick I couldn't go any further, as it needed to dry out overnight. The next day I had great fun using lots of different blue paint! I redid some of the sky, and added some gold highlights.<br />
<br />
So, this is my homage to Hokusai (minus the boats!).<br />

Had a trip to Tate Britain to see the Edward Burne-Jones exhibition. Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) is the last major figure associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, one of my favourite art movements. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group of English painters, poets and art critics founded in 1848 by William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.<br />
<br />
This is another stunning exhibition, with too many favourites, but here are a few -<br />

Edward Burne-Jones had a preoccupation with myth and legend which led to him working with sequences of images. These next three are from The Briar Rose series, based on the story of Sleeping Beauty.<br />

Good times with great friends and great artists!kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-5917944773951898332018-10-26T10:03:00.001+01:002018-10-26T10:03:50.609+01:00Remember ...I've neglected my blog recently due to trying to move house, which is taking up all my time and energy! I've got buyers for my house, but can't find one to move to! My reason for moving is that I want to have a dedicated studio space, which will probably mean a cabin in the garden, but there is not much on the market at the moment, so I'm finding it very frustrating. Anyway, if it is meant to happen it will!<br />
<br />
Because the potential move is taking up all my headspace, I've not been very creative recently, but the Fearless Four did get together last month, and following my butterfly bling creation (<a href="http://inkpaintandme.blogspot.com/2018/08/just-so.html">see here</a>), the concensus was to do something similar, again using old/broken jewellery, beads, and buttons.<br />
<br />
I decided to do hearts this time, and I got a box frame to put them in - rather pleased with the outcome. The hearts are MDF which I painted first. I've then used broken jewellery, buttons from my mother's button box, and beads. Try and spot the one common piece in each heart!<br />

I've been meaning to do this for a little while, so the subjects of the painting are now quite a bit bigger!<br />
<br />
I'm using watercolour paper, and to start with I did a background using diluted acrylic inks, as I didn't want the background to move again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBNlWXZTCPmfO76ZhfSRZeHmG_7R4S1KhZy4E4vpANP9iSqFfnTj4yl7P2BSCE6JX5jl-8jdE9SKN00kOlQk9jCHTqZgKOksc9cevmJk09sZJFnPvp_pSRaHfoF22ovAJs50lp7rsH7TdL/s1600/IMG_20180906_105815031.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBNlWXZTCPmfO76ZhfSRZeHmG_7R4S1KhZy4E4vpANP9iSqFfnTj4yl7P2BSCE6JX5jl-8jdE9SKN00kOlQk9jCHTqZgKOksc9cevmJk09sZJFnPvp_pSRaHfoF22ovAJs50lp7rsH7TdL/s400/IMG_20180906_105815031.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I then drew the outline and built up the colours with watercolour paint. I photographed the kittens on their play equipment, but I decided not to include all of it in the painting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwcaIWDdVgOK0mnKqT9Ot7SbosZVFPbuR3hHI1xgbEVYBptDITczXtizdL6hYYtU-TdUeD4PdnCmCKBlwYHndI70Wf0w_ZibtPgnjL8r1Sd5Vk-EZeiU4vRPoxzmRUm8zsvv45nKweWcWH/s1600/IMG_20180916_163819158.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwcaIWDdVgOK0mnKqT9Ot7SbosZVFPbuR3hHI1xgbEVYBptDITczXtizdL6hYYtU-TdUeD4PdnCmCKBlwYHndI70Wf0w_ZibtPgnjL8r1Sd5Vk-EZeiU4vRPoxzmRUm8zsvv45nKweWcWH/s400/IMG_20180916_163819158.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the detail I used a combination of wax pastels, watercolour pencils, and pen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi52l5TwlxldOQPjLFPSI9KD_5PMFQI_ecgd00haZ5knQnxZdOvizp7D4sQC2xlKGmxkTiMX0MwKoOrDcf1_rgkYTL7_HfgLkjHPc_9tFfhz_Fph9shCVsa94LPldhw3ntUZ4gL9YTnhlYN/s1600/IMG_20180924_193716.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1164" data-original-width="1600" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi52l5TwlxldOQPjLFPSI9KD_5PMFQI_ecgd00haZ5knQnxZdOvizp7D4sQC2xlKGmxkTiMX0MwKoOrDcf1_rgkYTL7_HfgLkjHPc_9tFfhz_Fph9shCVsa94LPldhw3ntUZ4gL9YTnhlYN/s400/IMG_20180924_193716.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Introducing brother and sister Ziggy and Socks.<br />
<br />
I met some friends for breakfast the other morning, and unusually for me I decided to try something completely different! I'm quite boring when it comes to food. Now, I don't normally write about food, but this was so unusual for me that I wanted to mark the event!!!<br />
<br />
I had the American breakfast, which included pancakes and maple syrup, and I rather liked it! Particularly the mix of syrup with the bacon and sausage! Another of our party decided to try the vegetarian version, but he ate the savoury bits first and then the pancakes and syrup!<br />

We're meeting again in November, so I may try something else ...<br />
<br />
Postscript - as suggested by <a href="http://alteredbooklover.blogspot.com/">Bluebeard and Elizabeth</a> (see comment below), I'm joining the T Stands for Tuesday (<a href="http://alteredbooklover.blogspot.com/2018/10/t-stands-for-margaritas.html">see here</a>). Never joined in before but I always enjoy reading about their foodie exploits!<br />

<br />
I've finally joined Instagram, as it is all about pictures! If you want to follow me, my user name is kaybee725.<br />
<br />
I've been to many exhibitions featuring Monet and he is by far my favourite Impressionist artist. It is his portrayal of light that I love, as well as the colours he uses, so I decided I wanted to have a go at using Monet's colour palette.<br />
<br />
I remembered a photo I had taken back in 1979 of the Bay of Naples, with Vesuvius in the background and Sorrento below. A typical Monet landscape! So I found the photo, which, fortunately, was in reasonable condition, and used that as inspiration.<br />
<br />
I decided to do a test canvas (it's 10 inches by 8 inches) -<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz_cgPI5UXdenZTyPF9bHQC0IJtlY0fkgg2PICwUqIFMPubHRKCRv44zcK8AIbYqGjk1AfSLjsiRa08SoqMJu_qob7vsmdeAgmXQv6WWqu_EsvPCQRBST-tNvC_8DkNOs6Bf4oCV2KvVad/s1600/Bay+of+Naples.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1242" data-original-width="1600" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz_cgPI5UXdenZTyPF9bHQC0IJtlY0fkgg2PICwUqIFMPubHRKCRv44zcK8AIbYqGjk1AfSLjsiRa08SoqMJu_qob7vsmdeAgmXQv6WWqu_EsvPCQRBST-tNvC_8DkNOs6Bf4oCV2KvVad/s400/Bay+of+Naples.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For a first attempt - not bad; but quite a few things I would change, so on to a larger canvas!<br />
<br />
Went to Tate Modern a couple of weeks ago to see the Picasso 1932 exhibition. Absolutely stunning! I've always been a Picasso fan, but this exhibition just blew me away - the size of the canvases, the colours, and the series of paintings all together - no words can describe how it made me feel!<br />
<br />
Here are a few of my favourites -<br />
<br />

Picasso also did collage - who knew!<br />
This is a composition of cloth, wood, plants, string, bug, butterfly and oil paint on canvas.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Composition with Butterfly</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I could add so many more ..<div>
<br /><i><b>" You start a painting and it becomes something altogether different.</b></i><br />
<i><b>It's strange how little the artist's will matters."</b></i><br />
<i>Picasso</i><br />

kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-914564905068225272018-08-21T14:57:00.001+01:002018-08-21T14:57:18.659+01:00Just so ...The latest Fearless Four get together resulted in each of doing something different for a change, as usually we decide on a project and all have a go at the same thing.<br />
<br />
During my recent visit to the RA Summer Exhibition I was inspired by a poodle covered in costume jewellery (<a href="http://inkpaintandme.blogspot.com/2018/08/finally.html">see here</a>).<br />
<br />
As I have quite a lot of broken costume jewellery, button boxes (my own, plus my mother's and others), and also beads, I thought it would be fun to use some of it.<br />
<br />
I die-cut some butterflies from grey board - 4 as I decided to double up to make the base stronger. I then gave them a coat of gesso and gold paint. I spent most of the time fixing all the bits and bobs onto the butterfly bases. They are quite heavy, so they are mounted onto a wood canvas which I had pre-prepared with some crackle paste and painted a strong turquoise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhweDbMZfIGa3U34TYm2mKk0C17VrDa9LzvjiyMc1BcdXAPlH2m5OQG3pdoLpH3p7saov5IwcjBLiiEtr8v3OuOMLV7AYQY0_uXMYihpagekS88nhDBNZEOw7zhnZ_4k33NSqYqRtg8ULEh/s1600/DSCN4717.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1225" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhweDbMZfIGa3U34TYm2mKk0C17VrDa9LzvjiyMc1BcdXAPlH2m5OQG3pdoLpH3p7saov5IwcjBLiiEtr8v3OuOMLV7AYQY0_uXMYihpagekS88nhDBNZEOw7zhnZ_4k33NSqYqRtg8ULEh/s400/DSCN4717.jpg" width="305" /></a></div>
<br />
And what did the others get up to?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi83CfbbfMrVZkNGyd-HDPNbRdaovcMRyywxnkjOyL4mGhUw4tMugbPwXLEMDwnUUh-2ncl9xSSReUmOszVQv0cnBdFZCQlxUxp2z14ZNditFDCekV9MKadF37Nr_24XVe3m45vvPAb5Pw3/s1600/Monica.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1147" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi83CfbbfMrVZkNGyd-HDPNbRdaovcMRyywxnkjOyL4mGhUw4tMugbPwXLEMDwnUUh-2ncl9xSSReUmOszVQv0cnBdFZCQlxUxp2z14ZNditFDCekV9MKadF37Nr_24XVe3m45vvPAb5Pw3/s400/Monica.jpg" width="286" /></a></div>
<br />
Monica wanted to do the peacock the rest of us did at a workshop earlier this year (<a href="http://inkpaintandme.blogspot.com/2018/05/strut-your-stuff.html">see here</a>), so we talked her through the steps.<br />

I also had another good day last week when we did a trip to Bateman's, home of Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936).<br />

The house was build in 1634 and is very Jacobean, with lots of dark paneling.<br />

Kipling moved there in 1902, the same year he wrote the Just So stories.<br />

I've finished all my unfinished projects! This last one I started a couple of months ago, but it kept getting pushed aside for something else.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfvjWGbV8oTGH3dsOr4lBoFLRF04j9BmxHhSyLJs5BssQTOA4JdnCR2AjiZDpoaGpmQYPcHHwmOjJ7UNRCeI6RVO3t84BrJWeN_P3SHWUoRqY7VLQ_FdgaMFH0Gmk0yS2x3dq2r7xNsm32/s1600/Blue+and+white+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1279" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfvjWGbV8oTGH3dsOr4lBoFLRF04j9BmxHhSyLJs5BssQTOA4JdnCR2AjiZDpoaGpmQYPcHHwmOjJ7UNRCeI6RVO3t84BrJWeN_P3SHWUoRqY7VLQ_FdgaMFH0Gmk0yS2x3dq2r7xNsm32/s400/Blue+and+white+1.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<br />
I started with a watercolour background (I added a bit of granulation medium), but the main image is all acrylic paint. I do like the combination of the watercolour with acrylic. I've put this one in my Etsy shop too.<br />
<br />
I went to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition last week, on one of the hottest days! We went early, and changed our travel plans so we didn't spend too long on the Tube, and was that a good decision - unbearable but only for 2 stops. Just could not do that journey every day (though I used to in my youth!).<br />
<br />
Anyway, enjoyed the exhibition but I don't think it was as good as some previous years.<br />
<br />
Here are some of my favourite pieces ...<br />
<br />

This summer so reminds me of the one in 1976 - I didn't like that one either!<br />
<br />
Anyway, I did try pouring acrylic paint onto glass, with some success.<br />
<br />
I found some glass items (leftover from the time I did glass painting), and decided to use a flat coaster/candle stand, 2 tealight holders and 2 votive holders.<br />
<br />
I upended everything and did 3 dirty pours and one pouring the colours separately. I tried to think about what the colours would look like from the "right" side!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMK6LrlV_uevxz51nOWYEq6RE1UHINlGz0aVX_IYyeni16ao20E_qipI1oCA6ob_d1YAd2Lt8NyaBwdaMRRvLTSuNb6pOTztlioRc5-w0zC2bXw8zS8-GBGrkwiSRztjU0EXubPZJxSNZ/s1600/Glass+pour+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1425" data-original-width="1600" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMK6LrlV_uevxz51nOWYEq6RE1UHINlGz0aVX_IYyeni16ao20E_qipI1oCA6ob_d1YAd2Lt8NyaBwdaMRRvLTSuNb6pOTztlioRc5-w0zC2bXw8zS8-GBGrkwiSRztjU0EXubPZJxSNZ/s400/Glass+pour+1.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Both votive holders were a disaster (dirty pours), and I hadn't considered what they would look like right way up with candles in them!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlkYd15xSMCIUuD2iPvtY8MJKR_G9jlm6xriC3IQKLtNLkaDRfIiAi3HZjydx9UiXCB-xr9fHTSCaJG-jyanCE3UvGx2Ft446O4OzyzplI2avsNqhcH0Jn9u8NcOkIbZ06Y7baj_DHz8Ul/s1600/Glass+pour+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1586" data-original-width="1600" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlkYd15xSMCIUuD2iPvtY8MJKR_G9jlm6xriC3IQKLtNLkaDRfIiAi3HZjydx9UiXCB-xr9fHTSCaJG-jyanCE3UvGx2Ft446O4OzyzplI2avsNqhcH0Jn9u8NcOkIbZ06Y7baj_DHz8Ul/s400/Glass+pour+2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
But the flat coaster turned out OK. This was another dirty pour, and I used too much black. I varnished the underside.<br />
<br />
I've put a hot mug of tea on it, and the paint wasn't affected.<br />
<br />
<br />

The 2 tealight holders turned out OK too, but the one where I poured the colours separately was better.<br />
<br />
Some of the paint ran onto the underside of the lip. I have burned a tealight and that was fine too.<br />
<br />
Again I varnished over the paint.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
What have I learned? The paint needs to be really really fluid, with careful consideration of the colour combinations, which are better poured separately; particularly for these small items. I will have another go, as I've still got some glass things.<br />
<br />
Another day trip last week, this time to Knebworth House in Hertfordshire; home to the Lytton family since 1490. Fascinating hearing about the family history spanning so many centuries.<br />
<br />
Knebworth is well known for its festivals and concerts, the biggest music event in British history was Robbie Williams Live at Knebworth in 2003.<br />

Great day out, apart from a bit of a nightmare journey home as the M25 was closed, so took nearly twice as long as it should!<br />
<br />
Going to the annual RA Summer Exhibition next week (if it is not too hot!), so looking forward to that.<br />

This one is a watercolour with collage.<br />
<br />
I applied the collage pieces first and then drew the outline of the poppy seed heads and thistles.This was followed by a washed background with cling film, I also used some Brusho too.<br />
<br />
I then painted the seed heads and thistles before using pen and ink for a little outlining.<br />

I recently saw the Monet & Architecture Exhibition at The National Gallery. What a joy that is, to see several series of paintings brought together. I loved the series of Rouen Cathedral, Venice, London, plus some I was unaware of, including earlier ones. I treated myself to the book of the Exhibition, and I really want to try painting with Monet's colour palette to see if I can come anywhere close to the way he depicts light.<br />
<br />
Here are just a handful of my favourites from the exhibition.<br />

Happy lazy summer days!<br />
<br />kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-60203659198530705392018-06-12T14:58:00.000+01:002018-06-12T14:58:42.606+01:00Lots of fun and a little history ...The Fearless Four got together recently and we decided to do a mixed media canvas of a bird of paradise.<br />
<br />
We all used a 10 x 8 canvas (I used a canvas board), and we had a reference photo to work with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVwYZ0iUVyCHjs0JeyYTs_4VkCY4pNZXew83IWAu4hzHDveO2pKZpLLruM3gdp_wNfWqNe1VQrxL3OITAP1Uzl2-36JWRBNgzRHV30A135V1ecAu2cB0SKMptmZ7_ynagsO3PQZl7pnm2/s1600/Bird+of+paradise+1st.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1314" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVwYZ0iUVyCHjs0JeyYTs_4VkCY4pNZXew83IWAu4hzHDveO2pKZpLLruM3gdp_wNfWqNe1VQrxL3OITAP1Uzl2-36JWRBNgzRHV30A135V1ecAu2cB0SKMptmZ7_ynagsO3PQZl7pnm2/s400/Bird+of+paradise+1st.jpg" width="327" /></a></div>
After painting the background and drawing the outline, I used tissue paper, skeleton leaves and string for the bird and tree branch.<br />
<br />
I've had skeleton leaves for more years than I care to remember, and I do use them occasionally, but the quantity never seems to diminish!<br />
<br />
All was applied using a little ivory Powertex.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I did try to stick to the bird's actual colouring using various brands of acrylic paint, including some pearlescent.<br />
<br />
Once home I added some texture paste and re-painted the background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvhYb3DXc_UWYOGCeZB3R_mqpFs8XSa0Em6ks0onWRdB_S-_QNb4tUsI-JAjFXUScEzahN_JwBsk7whR_kGMNMg-8j8S0Urtc-EJcozAfwLpfsagGxcE1HrU03V5cB0XCDgwL6wFG4c2qA/s1600/Bird+of+paradise.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1348" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvhYb3DXc_UWYOGCeZB3R_mqpFs8XSa0Em6ks0onWRdB_S-_QNb4tUsI-JAjFXUScEzahN_JwBsk7whR_kGMNMg-8j8S0Urtc-EJcozAfwLpfsagGxcE1HrU03V5cB0XCDgwL6wFG4c2qA/s400/Bird+of+paradise.jpg" width="336" /></a></div>
<br />
And the others? Lin used actual feathers on her bird, but then eventually decided to obliterate them with Powertex as she wasn't happy with it. It is not yet finished, so no photo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw_BoHf-AIb2unUF4rggcXOuMPb4OSJFegRVOBz8ypRiq3xMRikVF_jvcfYaUF_99pnLN0QnBtXen9Q5g1jgDsHk-eAR_h_V0aDw54K4xwrQogWtFk7UmYWvyWWJVkvG2hUyeoLcGrItwj/s1600/Monica.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw_BoHf-AIb2unUF4rggcXOuMPb4OSJFegRVOBz8ypRiq3xMRikVF_jvcfYaUF_99pnLN0QnBtXen9Q5g1jgDsHk-eAR_h_V0aDw54K4xwrQogWtFk7UmYWvyWWJVkvG2hUyeoLcGrItwj/s400/Monica.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
Here is Monica's - I do like the background on this one. I think the blue she has used is closer to the actual colour than mine.<br />

<br />
Another good day! Next time I think we are all doing something different - should be interesting!<br />
<br />
Recently had a trip to Eltham Palace, which is in Greenwich (London). For those who like a bit of history, Eltham Palace was once an important royal palace, and one of the few medieval palaces to survive with substantial remains intact. It was large enough to accommodate the entire Tudor court. Under Edward IV (1461-83) significant changes were made, including the addition of the 1470 great hall which still stands today.<br />
<br />
Eltham Palace then went into decline in the early 17th century. In the 1930s Stephen and Virginia Courtauld had a house built for them which adjoined the great hall. The Courtaulds left Eltham in 1944 and the site was occupied by Army educational units until 1992. English Heritage too over the site in 1995, repairing and restoring the 1930s house and gardens. It is now the finest art deco mansion open to the public.<br />
<br />
Here are just a few photos to give a flavour ...<br />

I'm in that usual place of too many projects and nothing finished! So here are some further acrylic pourings, when I tried adding some of the Pebeo fantasy paints - Prisme and Moon. I didn't add enough, but I do think the combination will work if I'm more adventurous with the quantities!<br />

This 17th century house in where Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life. The cottage was part of the Chawton Estate which her brother Edward inherited. Edward offered his mother and sisters this cottage as their home.<br />

This is quite a large canvas, 24 inches by 12 inches.<br />
<br />
We used acrylic paint, and also did some very mini pours on the peacock tail feathers, so a little bit random. There is also a little crackle paste on the background, for some texture. The background is very subtle, with just a hint of colour.<br />
<br />
Came home tired, paint spattered, and very happy.<br />

It was great fun with a lovely bunch of people, and the food was too delicious. A glass or three of wine with dinner too!<br />
<br />
We were using watercolour (including Brushos) and mixed media - for me that was mainly collage. I learned about using watercolour ground not only to knock back the collage pieces, but also to enable me to paint on top of the collage too.<br />
<br />
I also finally learned how to use a ruling pen with masking fluid - something I have struggled with, mostly ending up with a lot of blobs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_-Vr5welu3eaxtEhRaspYHVBZOd-8wHdzChQDTQ-tEYpC9FZuRz6biyxldDmu9QonOjhdBlHkLqcs4lp266CQsl9JDxFLj2RwM3zO7RRX6N_DU698AehON_cdi3i6MOQ9SYW1s2-3v-vj/s1600/Clock+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1217" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_-Vr5welu3eaxtEhRaspYHVBZOd-8wHdzChQDTQ-tEYpC9FZuRz6biyxldDmu9QonOjhdBlHkLqcs4lp266CQsl9JDxFLj2RwM3zO7RRX6N_DU698AehON_cdi3i6MOQ9SYW1s2-3v-vj/s400/Clock+3.jpg" width="303" /></a></div>
<br />
Another useful thing I did was to do three paintings together, so I wasn't too precious about it! After all, it is only a piece of paper!<br />
<br />
So, I did 3 of these at the same time, all slightly different ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj3Q7qalDmj4E4ZsUNH9UdtkYOtZeLQTkKshVtMZ3CzwnfuEBVNw4aNkguEoty4BZX-49dpNDtOk0dpCgHgBTAiV2IYrwfrxLv96D0C1E9D9mo-U6-TSuhClIdPxrEKBxhlzmHoIYrwkY_/s1600/Sunflower+gold+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1179" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj3Q7qalDmj4E4ZsUNH9UdtkYOtZeLQTkKshVtMZ3CzwnfuEBVNw4aNkguEoty4BZX-49dpNDtOk0dpCgHgBTAiV2IYrwfrxLv96D0C1E9D9mo-U6-TSuhClIdPxrEKBxhlzmHoIYrwkY_/s400/Sunflower+gold+2.jpg" width="293" /></a></div>
I had to finish the sunflower at home, as I ran out of time, and I wasn't prepared to take a damp painting on the train!<br />
<br />
The centre is textured, using tissue paper mixed with the watercolour ground. Also, rather than dry brushing, I used a piece of sandpaper to create a few subtle highlights on the centre.<br />
<br />
I also added a bit of gold too, but that doesn't really show in the photo.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I had a really fabulous time; so good to get away from everything and just paint!<br />
<br />
I've just started a 5 week course on portrait drawing. Something I've never tried and I'm finding it rather a challenge. We are using photos of famous people so it will be a test as to whether you recognise anyone!!<br />
<br />
Our mini heatwave is over and we are back to April showers, but my wisteria is about to flower, and it is covered in blooms, must remember to take photo.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-75694137969292183812018-04-15T14:03:00.000+01:002018-04-15T14:03:22.484+01:00I've seen the light ...I finally finished project three of my acrylic intermediate course. Should have done so in February, but a virus knocked me out for most of that month - which is best forgotten!<br />
<br />
This is the largest stretched canvas I've done so far - 24 inches by 18 inches. The aim of this project was to use a palette knife to apply the acrylic paint, so not much detail can be included. I found it a bit tricky at first, particularly the smaller areas, but I did enjoy using the knife on large expanses of the canvas, as I do like to create some texture. I did use a brush for tiny areas though, as even my smallest palette knife was too big!<br />
<br />
I remembered to take stage photos so ...<br />

First I did an outline sketch using pencil, then using very dilute paint, most of the canvas was covered with washes. The majority of the drips would ultimately disappear!<br />

Everything else was completed, and the final layers for the sea were added.<br />
<br />
Now, you may think this is finished ...<br />
<br />
The original photo was taken at sunset, so I had to add a warm glaze ... help - never done a glaze before and I had visions of ruining everything!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I procrastinated for a while, tidying up paints and brushes, and other inconsequential stuff. Then I held my breath and ... ended up doing two glaze layers as my first one was so pale. I think I have achieved that warm light you get when the sun sets.<br />
<br />
I won't be so frightened of glazing again, as it does tie everything together.<br />
<br />
I enjoyed using a palette knife, and will keep a couple in my tool box.<br />
<br />
I've just returned from an art holiday - just a few days, but I really enjoyed it. It will probably be the subject of my next post!<br />
<br />
Hurrah - the sun is out and it is feeling much warmer. Lots more tree blossom now too. Doesn't Spring just make you feel good?kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5934092560166549204.post-30062593926926807302018-04-03T19:10:00.000+01:002018-04-03T19:10:01.042+01:00Fish TalesI recently took part in another workshop using Powertex. We started with a large square canvas, and outlined the fish shapes. Apart from the basic shapes we could use any textures and colours we liked. This is a semi-abstract take on Siamese Fighting Fish.<br />
<br />
First we roughly painted in the background, and next we added texture onto the fish using a little Powertex. Then followed several layers of acrylic paint.<br />
<br />
A 5 hour workshop is quite an intense experience, and I didn't finish the detail until I got home, spending probably another hour or so on it until I was happy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I did a little research into these fish, as I'm not well versed in fishy facts, and here is a brief description:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">The </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Siamese fighting fish</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> (</span><i style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Betta splendens</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">), commonly known as the </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">betta</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">, is a popular fish in the aquarium trade. Bettas are a member of the gourami family and are known to be highly territorial. Males in particular are prone to high levels of aggression and will attack each other if housed in the same tank. If there is no means of escape, this will usually result in the death of one or both of the fish. Female bettas can also become territorial towards each other if they are housed in too small an aquarium. It is typically not recommended to keep male and female bettas together, except temporarily for breeding purposes which should always be undertaken with caution.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Wild bettas</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> live in shallow, freshwater areas. They prefer ponds, streams, canals and rice paddies, but they are also found in rivers. They feed upon plankton, mosquitoes and insect larvae. </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Bettas</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> are known as fighting </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">fish</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> because two males in close proximity will fight with one another for dominance.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #222222;"><span style="background-color: white;">So, remember - don't keep your Bettas in the same tank!</span></span><br />

<i>(A A Milne - Winnie the Pooh)</i><br />
<br />
The final project on my art course was to create an abstract and we had to find our own inspiration.<br />
<br />
Which for me involved a lot of thinking!<br />
<br />
Abstracts are quite difficult as they come from the imagination, but there has to be a starting point. For my inspiration I found a photo of a autumn day with the sun coming through autumnal foliage; I just loved the colours. Then - more thinking ...<br />
<br />
I decided to experiment by creating some poured acrylic skins. Which means doing a normal pour, but onto a non-stick surface. I used a silicon oven liner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUE1zSbr-OYdzGT8AwVLzq1QFMFdGPisUR96pLCBI2jA5i_DXzPPMtVFJGsUhY_XPmGVTw2fVhMlyGshFiopsdJNI9XcXM796t5bLog0krAGWL9L19tRQ5Kkpjw0HYCDvYD63kF40ikQx1/s1600/DSCN4037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1282" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUE1zSbr-OYdzGT8AwVLzq1QFMFdGPisUR96pLCBI2jA5i_DXzPPMtVFJGsUhY_XPmGVTw2fVhMlyGshFiopsdJNI9XcXM796t5bLog0krAGWL9L19tRQ5Kkpjw0HYCDvYD63kF40ikQx1/s400/DSCN4037.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I let them dry and cure for about 2 weeks before I peeled them off, and stored them between sheets of wax paper.<br />
<br />
I'm using a 12 x 12 stretched canvas, and I drew a design (for placement) before using dilute acrylic paint for the background.<br />
<br />
I'm quite impatient whilst waiting for paint to dry, so I have learned that putting more acrylic over wet acrylic takes the first layer off. I used this to my advantage by creating fast moving drips over over the wet first layer. I made both horizontal and vertical drips.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhwejafdOKRyugmwy8CBYbY6z9eXlzDCB0JyGGfccEdGCja0oW0d3j4cLLGM7biuwNQgxjXtH1LCWLJwzAYtPqVJNsZalicvAwpz67KkS0RlQo0TQun3uoICwR_6wfipPKiTrkEfNwi7W/s1600/DSCN4094.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1586" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhwejafdOKRyugmwy8CBYbY6z9eXlzDCB0JyGGfccEdGCja0oW0d3j4cLLGM7biuwNQgxjXtH1LCWLJwzAYtPqVJNsZalicvAwpz67KkS0RlQo0TQun3uoICwR_6wfipPKiTrkEfNwi7W/s400/DSCN4094.jpg" width="396" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Next I painted the circle in gold and added the horizontal and vertical lines. Later I knocked back the lines as they were too strong.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSbYfIXR1eKHoTievxZTGateU6adNr3RLSuH7iaB4HxbjwIsjbY-xnOqyWotddMUG7mYMDISml6KqzvJwtKyvCvwh_20mhtGjOrsMw54w8isxll8s6LzCN5GVrBW6nDyWCxYadnjb1Q7ZT/s1600/DSCN4096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1583" data-original-width="1600" height="395" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSbYfIXR1eKHoTievxZTGateU6adNr3RLSuH7iaB4HxbjwIsjbY-xnOqyWotddMUG7mYMDISml6KqzvJwtKyvCvwh_20mhtGjOrsMw54w8isxll8s6LzCN5GVrBW6nDyWCxYadnjb1Q7ZT/s400/DSCN4096.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I carefully cut the skins (with scissors). I do like geometric shapes, hence triangles! Finally, I added some mica pieces (Golden's Gold Mica Flakes) which are held in a transparent medium.<br />
<br />

I've called this "Summer's Last Breath", and it will probably go into my Etsy shop.<br />
<br />
Hope we have seen the last of the bitter cold wind and freezing temperatures, and that summer is not far away!kaybeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12883721725089570024noreply@blogger.com1
